Purnima holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and is a distinguished former Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow. She has held key research positions at CEA Saclay in France and TIFR Mumbai, with a research focus on exotic nuclear matter, especially the behavior of nuclei under extreme angular momentum and unusual proton-to-neutron ratios. Her expertise includes conducting particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments at premier facilities such as GANIL and ILL in France, TIFR and IUAC in India, and ANL in the USA. She has also contributed to developing and testing next-generation spectrometers, including segmented HPGe detectors, particle detectors, and LaBr3(Ce) fast scintillators, advancing the field of nuclear structure studies. In addition, Purnima has extensive teaching experience, spanning K-12 to postgraduate levels, as well as professional work with a U.S.-based edtech company.
Purnima is a distinguished nuclear physicist with over 50 publications in leading journals like Physical Review Letters, Physical Review C, and European Physical Journal A and more than 70 presentations at international conferences. With a decade of teaching and research experience across top institutions in India and abroad, she has independently developed research proposals, managed projects, and collaborated widely, enhancing her expertise and keeping her at the forefront of nuclear physics. Her research work has contributed to advancing nuclear structure research by studying nuclei at extremes of spin and isospin through gamma-ray and particle spectroscopy. She has led and participated in several experimental projects at world-renowned facilities, including Argonne National Laboratory (USA), GANIL (France), ILL (France), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai), and the Inter University Accelerator Centre (India). Purnima is also deeply dedicated to public outreach and education. She has made nuclear physics more accessible to a broad audience through public seminars, interactive demonstrations, lectures, school visits, and social media, highlighting its impact on fields from energy to medicine. As a mentor, she has guided PhD students and supervised undergraduate research projects, helping students with data analysis, result interpretation, and skill development — ultimately inspiring many to pursue careers in science.
