Professional background and credentials

Steve has always been passionate about physics and mathematics, so studying physics at degree level was the obvious choice. During his four-year degree course, Steve spent a year at the nuclear research laboratory GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, working alongside an international team of nuclear physicists. After graduating, Steve joined a radar research laboratory as a research scientist looking at how advanced processing can improve radar performance. One project involved adapting radar parameters to challenging radar propagation environments, while another investigated how genetic algorithms could be used to tune radar parameters dynamically. Steve has been a member of the Institute of Physics since he was an undergraduate and is a keen reader of their monthly magazine, Physics World. He first learned about the Omni Calculator website from an article in the magazine about the Drink Chilling Calculator. Since then, he has been mentioned twice in the magazine for creating the Flat vs. Round Earth Calculator (Dec 2020 p3) and the Drake Love Equation Calculator (Feb 2022 p3).
