As you most surely know, a milligram (abbreviated as mg) is an SI unit of mass equal to 1/1,000 of a gram. But what is a tablespoon? We need to discuss it before talking about converting milligrams to tablespoons!

What is a tablespoon?

A tablespoon is one of many units of volume. It is equal to 14.7868 mL (often rounded to 15 mL), to ½ fluid ounce, or to three teaspoons. We most often abbreviate tablespoons tbsp, sometimes also as T or Tb.

How do I convert milligrams to tablespoons?

To convert between milligrams to tablespoons, use the well-known density formula. However, you must remember to use the correct units! To convert mg to tbsp:

Volume [tbsp] = Mass [mg] / Density [mg/tbsp]

To convert from tablespoons to milligrams, use the following formula:

Mass [mg] = Density [mg/tbsp] × Volume [tbsp]

How do I express density as milligrams per tablespoon?

Most often, when trying to convert mg to tbsp, you won't easily find the density in mg per tbsp as other units are more popular. Here are some useful conversion factors:

  • 1 mg/tbsp = 0.06763 kg/m³
  • 1 mg/tbsp = 6.76280×10-5 g/cm³
  • 1 mg/tbsp = 6.76280×10-5 g/mL
  • 1 mg/tbsp = 2.44322×10-6 lb/in³
  • 1 mg/tbsp = 0.00056 lb/US gal

FAQ

How many mg in a tablespoon of water?

One tbsp of water is 15,000 milligrams of water, so 15 grams. To get this answer:

  1. Write down the density of water: 1 g/mL.
  2. Recall that one tablespoon is about 15 mL.
  3. Multiply the volume by the density: 15 [mL] × 1 [g/mL] = 15 [g].
  4. Convert grams to mg: 15 [g] × 1000 = 15,000 [mg].

How many milligrams are in a tablespoon?

As milligrams are units of mass and tablespoons are units of volume, you need to know the density of a substance you measure. For instance, 100 mg of water is around 0.007 tbsp, while for sugar it is around 0.008 tbsp.
