How to add times together
Adding times together is like adding other regular numbers. We just need to remember that we need 60 seconds to complete a minute
, 60 minutes to complete an hour
, 24 hours to make a full day
, 7 days to make a week
, and so on.
That means if we add time values in seconds that result in values greater than 60, we can already utilize the minutes unit. Or if we obtain a time value greater than 24 hours, we can already say that the time value is more than a day.
For example, adding 48 seconds and 37 seconds results in 85 seconds. But since 60 seconds of it is already a minute, we can subtract 60 seconds from 85 seconds to get a minute and a remainder of 25 seconds, giving us a total time value of 1 minute and 25 seconds.
The same thing applies to larger time units.

FAQ
How do I add seconds and hours?
To add, let's say, 4,560 seconds to 2 hours:
-
First, convert 4,560 seconds to hours. Divide it by 3,600:
4,560 / 3,600 = 1.2667 hours
-
Any whole number in our quotient represents values in hours. In our example, we have 1 hour that we can add to 2 hours to get 3 hours.
-
Then multiply any decimals by 3,600 to find the remaining seconds. In this case:
0.2667 × 3,600 = 960 seconds
-
We can also divide 960 seconds by 60 to have:
960 seconds / 60 = 16 minutes
Since there is no remainder, our final total time value is 3 hours and 16 minutes.
What time is it 45 minutes after 10:15?
It's 11 o'clock. Adding 45 minutes to the 15-minute part of the clock reading results in 60 minutes or 1 hour. That also means the minute-hand of a clock will already make a complete turn, which will cause the hour-hand to move precisely to the next hour. In this problem, that would be 11 o'clock.
