With this arrow FOC calculator, we aim to help you to calculate the front-of-center of your arrows.

This article is written to help you understand what the arrow FOC is and how to calculate the FOC of your arrow. Some practical examples are also given to help you to understand the concept.

What is arrow FOC?

Arrow FOC (front of center) is an important measure of an arrow's balance and overall performance. A higher FOC means that more of the arrow's weight is concentrated closer to the front of the arrow, which effectively increases the arrow's stability in flight. This helps the arrow fly more accurately and penetrate more deeply into the target, allowing for more consistent and precise shooting. Please use our accuracy calculator and distance calculator to understand more about this topic.

Additionally, a higher FOC can result in increased velocity, enabling the arrow to reach greater distances while still maintaining its accuracy. Ultimately, a higher FOC offers improved performance which all archers should strive to achieve.

How to calculate the FOC of your arrow?

Arrow FOC

Now that you understand what arrow FOC is let's look at the arrow FOC calculation. To understand the arrow FOC calculation, let's look at the following example:

  • Arrow type: Hunting arrow
  • Arrow length (A): 30cm
  • Length to the balance point (B): 18cm
  1. Determine the full length of the arrow (A)

The first step of the calculation is to determine the full length of the arrow, A. For our hunting arrow, the arrow length is 30 cm.

  2. Calculate the length to the balance point (B)

Next, you need to calculate the length from the throat of the nock to the balance point, B. The B for our hunting arrow is 18 cm.

  3. Calculate the arrow FOC

The last step is to calculate the arrow FOC using the formula below:

    (B - A / 2) / A

    Thus, this hunting arrow's FOC is (18 cm - 30 cm / 2) / 30 cm = 0.1 or 10%.

Now, let's talk about what a good arrow FOC is.

What is a good FOC for an arrow?

This is the million-dollar question. Unfortunately, there is no one simple answer. The ideal FOC for an arrow differs for each archer, and it depends on the type of shooting you are doing. A higher FOC is better for target shooting, as it helps the arrow fly more accurately and penetrate more deeply into the target. A lower FOC is better for hunting, as it allows the arrow to reach greater distances while still maintaining its accuracy. Generally speaking, you would want a hunting arrow to have 10% to 15% FOC.

Ultimately, the best FOC for any arrow is the one that works best for you and your shooting style. To understand more about shooting, use our arrow speed calculator.

FAQ

What are the benefits of a higher FOC?

A higher FOC helps the arrow fly more accurately and penetrate more deeply into the target, allowing for more consistent and precise shooting. Additionally, a higher FOC can result in increased velocity, enabling the arrow to reach greater distances while maintaining accuracy.

What is the FOC of an arrow with a 20 cm length to the point of balance?

Let's assume the length of the arrow is 30 cm. The FOC of that arrow will be 16.667%. You can calculate this by applying the formula:

FOC = (length to the balance point - arrow length / 2) / arrow length × 100.

How can I increase the FOC of my arrow?

One way to increase FOC is to add weight to the front of the arrow. Another way is to reduce the weight of the arrow shaft, such as by using a lighter material or reducing the arrow's diameter.

How can I calculate the FOC of my arrows?

You can calculate the FOC of your arrows in three steps:

  1. Determine the full length of the arrow (A).
  2. Calculate the length to the balance point (B).
  3. Calculate arrow FOC by applying the FOC formula:
    ((B - A / 2) / A) × 100.
