Rijk obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Stellenbosch University. His undergraduate work specialized in topics such as machine learning, web development, and digital signal processing. As part of his research for his Master’s, he used a novel swarm intelligence algorithm for clustering data; he implemented the algorithm from scratch, performed hundreds of experiments to tune algorithm hyperparameters, and used statistical tests to interpret the results. For his work with Omni calculator, Rijk has created calculators for a variety of problems relating to engineering, mathematics, video games, and music. He’s especially proud of his floating point calculator (which teaches users about the way computers store numbers), his chord finder (which helps users find the names of chords based on the musical notes it contains), and his Minecraft circle generator (which approximates circles of any size with squares). You can find these calculators and many more on the first page of Google.
Rijk’s research on swarm intelligence for data clustering was published in Proceedings of the 2023 7th International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Metaheuristics & Swarm Intelligence, where he was awarded “Best session presentation”.
