Calculating GST and QST, HST and PST: what do these acronyms stand for?

In Canada, most non-essential goods and services are subject to sales taxes. There are, however, some differences between provinces.

  • The GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a federal tax that applies to all provinces. The GST rate is currently 5%. For example, products such as clothing, electronics, and restaurant meals are subject to GST.

    If you'd like to know more about GST (Goods and Services Tax) in general, visit our GST calculator.

  • The PST is a provincial sales tax. Its rate varies from province to province; Alberta, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon have no PST. The tax applies to everyday products such as gasoline, alcohol, and tobacco.

  • The QST is the Quebec sales tax. It corresponds to the PST but is specific to Quebec. This tax applies to gasoline, cars, hotels, clothing, food products, etc.

  • The HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is a combination of GST and PST. It facilitates business taxation. Five Canadian provinces have adopted the HST, with different rates in each: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador. This tax applies to renovations, car repairs, legal and accounting fees, and more.

To make it easier for you to calculate not only GST and QST but also PST and HST, here's a table of the different provincial rates:

Sales tax calculation example: GST/QST calculation

This section will show you how to calculate GST and QST taxes by hand. Suppose you live in Quebec. You decide to go shopping and fall in love with a suit. The price tag reads $150. How much will you have to pay in the end?

In Quebec, two taxes apply: GST (5%) and QST (9.975%). To calculate GST/QST, use the following formulas:

GST=price×GST rate\scriptsize \text{GST} = \text{price} \times \text{GST rate}
QST=price×QST rate\scriptsize \text{QST} = \text{price} \times \text{QST rate}

In our example, this gives us:

finalprice=initialprice+GST+QST\scriptsize \begin{gather*}\text{final} \\[-0.4em]\text{price} \end{gather*} = \begin{gather*}\text{initial} \\[-0.4em]\text{price} \end{gather*} + \text{GST} + \text{QST}
finalprice=$150+$7.50+$14.96=$172.46\scriptsize \begin{align*} \begin{gather*}\text{final} \\[-0.4em]\text{price} \end{gather*} &= \$150 + \$7.50 + \$14.96\\ & = \$172.46 \end{align*}

And that's it! You've done the GST/QST calculation by hand. So, once the Goods and Services Tax and the Quebec Sales Tax are applied, you'll have to pay $172.46 for your suit. This is simply a percentage increase calculation.

Calculate GST/HST: how do I use the GST/QST calculator?
