How is VA disability calculated?
The VA calculations look differently, depending on the amount of ranked disabilities.
One disability:
This case is straightforward: find the percentage of your disability using the VA disability pay charts presented below.
If your disability equals 30% or more, you should also add additional amounts (in U.S. $):
- For a spouse receiving Aid and Attendance:
30% | 40% | 50% | 60% | 70% | 80% | 90% | 100% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$48 | $64 | $81 | $96 | $113 | $129 | $145 | $160.89 |
- For each additional child under the age of 18:
30% | 40% | 50% | 60% | 70% | 80% | 90% | 100% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$26 | $34 | $43 | $52 | $61 | $69 | $78 | $87.17 |
- For each additional child over age 18 in a qualifying school program:
30% | 40% | 50% | 60% | 70% | 80% | 90% | 100% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$84 | $112 | $140 | $168 | $197 | $225 | $253 | $281.57 |
Two or more disabilities:
Here, the thing gets a little more complicated – we need to calculate the cumulative disability and the disability rating. Our VA compensation calculator uses the following equation:
where:
- – Cumulative disability;
- – Greatest disability percentage means your greatest recorded disability, e.g., among disabilities 30%, 60%, 10%, you need to choose 60%; and
- – 2nd greatest disability percentage – following the example below, you should choose 30%.
💡 You need to use this equation a few times if your number of disabilities is greater than 2. During the 2nd and further rounds of calculations, use the previously calculated cumulative disability as the value of the greatest disability percentage. The modified equation will look as follows:
and so on, where:
- – Cumulative disability (no. 2); and
- – 3rd Greatest disability percentage means your greatest recorded disability, e.g., among disabilities 30%, 60%, 10%, you need to choose 10%.
Then, we need to calculate the disability rating.
Our VA disability combined rating calculator, as officially advised, rounds the cumulative disability to tens.
For example:
- 44% = 40%;
- 56% = 60%; and
- 24% = 20%.
Your next step would be looking at the VA disability charts ⤵️ and finding your category according to the number of your dependents (children, parents, spouse).
Remember to include additional amounts if you have:
- More than 1 child under 18 years old;
- More than 1 child over 18 years old in a qualifying school program; or
- A spouse receiving Aid & Attendance.
