What is a good ACT score?

Before we discuss what is a good ACT score, let's establish what ACT even is. The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It shows how prepared a student is for college and gives colleges a way to compare all applicants.

The ACT composite score and each individual test score (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science) range from 1 (lowest) to 36 (highest).

A good ACT score can really boost one's college application, making it easier to get into top schools and qualify for scholarships. Usually, a score above 24 is considered good, and anything 30 or higher is excellent.

How is the ACT scored?

Each section of the ACT is scored from 1 to 36. The tests and their maximum raw scores are divided into 4 sections:

  • English — 75 questions;
  • Math — 60 questions;
  • Reading — 40 questions; and
  • Science — 40 questions.

Your raw score is the number of questions you got right in each section. These are converted to scaled scores between 1 and 36 using the official ACT chart. The composite ACT score, which is your total ACT score, is the average of your scaled scores from all sections, rounded to the nearest whole number.

How to use ACT score calculator

Our ACT score calculator has four input windows where you enter your raw scores (the number of correct answers) for each section of the test:

  1. English;
  2. Mathematics;
  3. Reading; and
  4. Science.

Below each inputted raw score, you'll see how you scored in the ACT scoring system. At the bottom, the calculator will display your composite ACT score and show what percentile you fall into among ACT test takers. This will help you understand how your scores compare to others and where you stand in the competitive landscape.

Is the ACT harder than the SAT?

The SAT isn't necessarily harder than the ACT, or the other way around. It all depends on what you're good at:

  • ACT — Faster-paced with more questions and a Science section.
  • SAT — Slower-paced, more focused on problem-solving and critical thinking.

Both tests include Math, Reading, and English sections. The ACT might feel harder if you struggle with time, while the SAT might be more challenging if you prefer more straightforward questions. It really depends on your personal skills and preferences.
