Percent solution formula: What is the mass by volume percent? How to use the percent solution calculatorPercent weight calculator: how to figure out mass percentPercent volume calculatorFAQsThe percent solution calculator, which you may also refer to as the weight to volume percent calculator, is here to help you figure out how to find the concentration of a solution. You can also use it as a percent weight calculator and a percent volume calculator to determine the mass percentage and the volume percentage, respectively.
Read on if you want to discover:
- What is mass by volume percent?

And more... Let's go!
🙋 If you're interested in concentration, you might want to consult the concentration calculator or the percentage concentration to molarity calculator, which allow you to convert molarity into percentage concentration.

Percent solution formula: What is the mass by volume percent?
To obtain a solution, we have to add some solute to a solvent, and the mass by volume percent, or concentration, is the solute content of that solution. Solvents are usually liquid, so we can dissolve substances in them, while solutes can be virtually anything as long as they dissolve and spread evenly in a solvent.
The percent solution formula is relatively straightforward! All you need to do is follow a few steps:
-
Determine the weight (mass) of your solute. Let's take
7.8 g
of sugar. -
Dissolve the solute in your solvent and determine the overall volume of your solution. Let's assume we dissolved the sugar in some water and ended up with
62 ml
of a sugar and water solution. -
Divide the mass by the volume and multiply by
100
:mass to volume percentage = mass of solute / volume of solution) × 100
mass to volume percentage = (7.8 / 62) × 100 = 12.58%
Try to do it yourself! What is the concentration of a 162-milliliter solution containing 32 grams of solute? 🤔 (Spoiler alert: the answer is in the next paragraph. Don't look!)
How to use the percent solution calculator
This weight-to-volume percent calculator allows you to skip the steps above! Here's what you have to do:
-
Insert the mass of your solute. In this case, we have
32 g
. (As always, you can switch between units as you please by clicking on the unit on the right-hand side of any field.) -
Insert the volume of the solution:
162 ml
. -
The calculator immediately tells you the mass to volume percentage:
19.753%
. -
Have a look at the second section of the calculator to see the concentration in mass per volume, parts per million or billion, and custom mass per volume (for example, per
250 ml
of solution). In this case, the results look as follows:- Mass per volume:
0.198 g/ml
; - Parts per million:
197531 ppm
; and - Custom mass per volume:
49.38 g per 250 ml
.

Percent weight calculator: how to figure out mass percent
This percent solution calculator can also be used as a percent weight calculator. To use this function, expand the "Weight percentage" section.
- Double-check or insert the mass of the solute.
- Insert the mass of the solution.
- The percent solution calculator instantly tells you the weight percentage (also known as mass percentage).
Let's take a look at the percent by mass formula:
weight percentage = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 100
Therefore, if you want to find the percentage by mass, you need to divide the mass of the solute by the mass of the solution obtained and then multiply by 100.
Now, you also know how to determine weight percent. But surely, it will be easier to use our percent solution calculator!
🙋 Make sure to check our mass percent calculator, which calculates the weight percent of a solution or a chemical and determines the percent composition from the number of atoms.
Percent volume calculator
The last section of this tool allows you to calculate the volume percentage. Similarly to the percent by mass formula, to find the volume percentage, you need to divide the volume of the solute by the volume of the obtained solution and then multiply by 100.
Let's see how to calculate percent volume with our percent solution calculator:
-
Expand the "Volume percentage" section of the percent solution calculator.
-
If you have already inserted the weight of your solute and you know its density, check the checkbox at the beginning of the section. Upon entering the density, the volume of your solute will be calculated automatically. You can also insert this volume manually if you wish.
-
Double-check or insert the volume of the solution.
-
That's it! The volume percentage appears just below.
Keep in mind that this percent solution calculator is fully integrated. This means that as you type more and more information, the missing fields will become populated automatically! We suggest you try it out: expand all the sections, start inserting different data (the order doesn't matter), and look at how the tool fills in the gaps!
How could you increase the concentration of a solution?
To increase the concentration of a solution, you could:
- Increase the amount of solute without adding any solvent;
- Add less solvent without decreasing the amount of solute; or
- Both.
You can experiment until you obtain the right concentration!
How do I figure out mass percent?
If you want to learn how to determine the mass percentage of a solution, follow these simple steps:
- Take the mass of your solute.
- Divide the mass of the solute by the mass of the obtained solution.
- Multiply the result by 100. This is your mass percentage.
For example, for a 150-gram solution with 46 g of solute:
mass percentage = (46 / 150) × 100 = 30.67%
What is a 16 percent solution?
A 16 percent solution is a solution in which the mass of the solute constitutes exactly 16% of the volume of the solution. For example, let's say that we have 50 g of solute:
16 = (50 / volume of solution) × 100
volume of solution = 312.5
To obtain a 16 percent solution with the amount of solute you have, you will need to create a 312.5-milliliter solution.
How do I calculate percent volume?
To calculate volume percentage, follow these simple steps:
-
Take the volume of your solute. You can calculate it from the weight and density of the solute:
density of solute = weight of solute / volume of solute
-
Divide the volume of the solute by the volume of the obtained solution.
-
Multiply by 100. This is the volume percentage of your solution!
