Welcome to Omni's IELTS score calculator, where we help you estimate your score in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), an English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers.

What is IELTS in practice?

The IELTS test consists of four components: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each of these components gives you an individual score which you can enter into our IELTS band score calculator. Read on to find out more about how to calculate the IELTS score or what a good IELTS score range is if you want to apply to a university.

💡 If you don't want to know how to prepare for IELTS but rather focus on your English in general, we have a nice tool for you! Our English learning time calculator can show you how long you will need to study to reach a certain level of language proficiency such as B2 or C1.

What is IELTS exam?

The IELTS exam aims to verify your English skills when applying for a job, a university place, or simply migrating to other countries. The IELTS test is broadly accepted by thousands of organizations across the globe as a reliable English skill certificate.

What does IELTS stand for?

Its full name is International English Language Testing System, and it is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge English.

Now that you know what the IELTS exam is, it's time to see how the IELTS score works in practice!

How IELTS is scored?

The test is two-hour long and consists of four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking:

  • Listening — listen to audio recordings and answer questions about them;
  • Reading — read texts and answer questions about them;
  • Writing — write two essays: one theme-based and one with independent writing; and
  • Speaking — have a conversation with an examiner.

Each section gives you a whole or half band score, ranging from a minimum of 0 (test not taken) to a maximum of 9 (Expert). The rounded average of these sections results in your overall score.

Taking the test may be a challenging task in a limited time. If you ask how to prepare for IELTS, we suggest you start reading and writing in English. Our two tools: reading time calculator or words per minute calculator, may be especially handy to see the improvements in your performance over time.

How to use the IELTS score calculator

The IELTS band score calculator consists of several parts. The main one tells you your final score based on each score obtained for listening, reading, writing, and speaking. To use it:

  1. Check your IELTS score for each component of the test.

  2. Enter them in the corresponding fields of the IELTS score calculator.

  3. The tool will average the results similarly to our average calculator. To see it, just tick the Show average result box.

  4. The final score is rounded to the nearest 0.5 multiples.

  5. The IELTS calculator also offers conversion between the number of correct answers and band score for listening and reading tests.

Perfect! Now you know how to calculate your IELTS score. Check the following sections to see how the IELTS score is calculated for listening and reading from obtained points. Speaking and writing don't have related points. Instead, the scores are assessed by experts using different criteria.

How do I calculate IELTS score?

To find your IELTS score:

  1. Check the band scores you receive from listening, reading, speaking, and writing tests.
  2. Add them together and divide by four.
  3. Round the result up to the nearest half, e.g., 6.25 to 6.5.
  4. This is your IELTS score.

What is IELTS listening score with 32 correct answers?

It is a 7.5 band score, which corresponds to 32-34 correct answers. You would need three extra points to obtain a score of 8.

The IELTS listening test is the same for academic and general training variants of the IELTS. During the test, you will need to answer 40 questions after listening to four recordings. Each recording will be played once.

What is IELTS reading score with 34 correct answers?

Your reading score is 7 if you take general training or 7.5 for academic tests.

The latter is more difficult since it includes more specialized vocabulary and more complex sentences. That's why you need fewer correct answers to get a better IELTS reading score on the academic test.

How long is IELTS score valid?

The validity of the IELTS test is, in most cases, two years and should be counted from the date on the IELTS test report form you receive. However, the IELTS results in Australia are valid for Skilled Migration applications for three years.

It is up to the organization you apply to choose a proper IELTS validity period. Be sure to check its requirements beforehand.
